Whether in preparation to sell or entertain through the summer months, Spring has traditionally been a season of cleaning, organizing, and updating the home. However, there are some tasks that should be completed more often or in different seasons. Here is a list of common maintenance tasks to care for your home year-round.


  • Clean faucet aerators and showerheads, simply soak in vinegar
  • Unclog sink and tub drains
  • Clean windows and screens
  • Polish wood furniture
  • Dust ceiling lights

Twice a year

  • Vacuum lint from dyer vent
  • Check batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
  • Recaulk tub, shower, and sinks if needed
  • Change/clean HVAC air filters
  • Clean kitchen exhaust hood and filter
  • Vacuum curtains
  • Clean leaves from gutters


  • Inspect heating system and fireplace in preparation for winter
  • Power wash windows and siding
  • Touch up exterior paint
  • Clean major appliances before or after planned heavy use, such as the holidays
  • Check refrigerator seal, close it on a dollar bill, the bill should be hard to pull out
  • Check fire extinguishers
  • Clean the carpets
  • Swap screens for storm windows
  • Check window and door seals such as caulking and weatherstripping
  • Vacuum refrigerator coils
  • Test GFCI outlets
  • Inspect roof
  • Inspect air-conditioner in preparation for summer
  • Refinish the deck if needed
